Trump Comments on Morocco’s Plan
According to a Moroccan official news agency, Trump emphasized that this plan offers the only pathway to a sustainable resolution of the prolonged dispute over the contested region.
Trump’s comments were reportedly delivered in a letter to Moroccan monarch King Mohammed VI, who recently commemorated the 26th anniversary of his accession to the throne.
Additionally, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio conveyed a message on Wednesday acknowledging Morocco as one of Washington’s “oldest and closest friends,” congratulating the King on his coronation anniversary.
As the news agency cited on Saturday, Trump affirmed, “The United States deeply values our strong and enduring partnership with Morocco. Together we are advancing shared priorities for peace and security in the region, including by building on the Abraham Accords, combating terrorism and expanding commercial cooperation.”
He further emphasized, “I also reiterate that the United States recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara.”
The territory of Western Sahara has remained a focal point of tension for decades, with Morocco facing off against the Algeria-supported Polisario Front.
The latter seeks a UN-organized referendum on self-determination for the Sahrawi people.
Meanwhile, Morocco—exercising authority over the majority of the area—views it as an integral part of the country and maintains that its autonomy initiative is the only practical answer to the impasse.
